Bali Villas Great Deal

The story of Taman Bebek dates back to 1944, when American musicologist Colin McPhee built a Balinese house and beautiful garden on the edge of the ridge above the magnificent Ayung River valley. During the 1930s this area was the playground of many international stars — such as Margaret Mead, Barbara Hutton and Betty Waterson.

In 1980, when landscape artist and writer Made Wijaya acquired the land, only the foundations of these houses remained – the view, however, was still magnificent and unspoiled.

A number of cottages, approximating the scale and layout of the original pavilions, were slowly built. During the years 1985 – 87 these were Made Wijaya’s home. Ten other villas, swimming pools, and a café/library and shop have been added since 1988.

The new villas, all with the lush gardens and views overlooking the river valley, are unique in design and have a tranquil atmosphere. Taman Bebek is a lovely place to soak in the beauty of the Balinese countryside and culture.

VALLEY VIEW EAST VILLA
These two villas are a mix between the Queenslander and the Malay house styles, with broad wrap–around verandahs, spacious garden bathrooms and colonial–Dutch interiors.

VALLEY VIEW WEST VILLA
These two villas are a mix between the Queenslander and the Malay house styles, with broad wrap–around verandahs, spacious garden bathrooms and colonial–Dutch interiors.

CROISSANT villa
n 1980 French heiress and Balinese dance aficionado Agnes Yeti commissioned Wijaya to design a cottage in the former garden of musicologist Colin McPhee, adjacent to Villa Made.

Wijaya had always loved the colonial ‘Queenslander’ style of Australian country house, wrapped with wide verandas; this became the inspiration for the house. The interiors are a unique Franco–Javo–Balinese blend. Architect Peter Muller and his wife stayed in Croissant Cottage where they designing and building the legendary Amandari hotel just up the road.

ROYAL VILLA
This villa was built on the site of musicologist Colin McPhee’s original 1950s Bali home, as featured in his book ‘A House in Bali.’

Built in the Balinese Majapahit (red brick) style, the villa overlooks the hotel northern swimming pool and the Ayung River valley beyond. This villa features a very private bathroom garden with valley views.

made VILLA
Villa Made was writer/landscaper Made Wijaya’s original Sayan home, designed by Wijaya in the mountain style he calls Bali–Baronial.. The thatched, split–level villa has a full bathroom on each floor and a small kitchenette.

It is one of the most dramatically sited mountain view villas in Bali. The architecture style is rustic – sliding Japanese style screen walls and dark Jaka Palm floors, with coconut wood columns – but the interiors are contemporary and comfortable. There is a small swimming pool adjacent this villa and a Balinese kitchen on an upper terrace where dinners can be served under the stars in Sayan style. Villa Made has for ten years been the summer retreat of photographer Tim Street-Porter and his writer artist wife Annie Kelly.

MALAY VILLA
Wijaya is an authority on regional architect and wanted in this villa to showcase the elegant bungalow style of Trengganu in Malaysia, the home of some of Malaysia’s most handsome colonial/traditional buildings.

The interiors feature textiles by Lady Victoria Waymouth, and many antique pieces. An airy, independent bath–house, connected to the house, has a great view across the river valley. The bungalow has a wide view-side verandah. Francis and Eleanor Coppola stayed in the Malay House while conceptualizing their Belize beach hotel, The Turtle Inn.

BALI AGA SUITE
Spacious suites located near the new lap pool and outdoor of Bali Aga Museum of Architecture. These suites are the newest and most luxurious of Taman Bebek accommodation.

Set in a former coconut plantation, the villas have both valley and garden views and are conveniently situated near the hotel’s lap pool, lobby and dining terrace.

PRESIDENTIAL SUITE
In 1995, Made Wijaya wanted a new house to showcase the view of neighboring site and was keen to flex some architectural muscle on the site. With his partners Gusti Sarjana and Nyoman Miyoga, a ‘Presidential Villa’ was conceived in a style that could be called ‘power dressing’.

He wanted to do a substantial house that would be a new direction for traditional Balinese architecture and also their office’s decorative clout. The land’s three gentle terraces were turned into a dramatic two, with a lozenge–shaped lap–pool taking up most of the lower terrace. Three traditional structures were then built on the sizeable upper terrace.

(P.S. A view of the valley and the pool is desperately needed to define the house style and show the reader “one of Bali’s seven natural wonders” alluded to).

The main house he now called the Presidential Suite was built in the form of pure Balinese wantilan–the two–storied community halls that host cockfights in the wet season and gamelan rehearsals in the dry. This building was to house the public areas–the living and dining–with the master bedroom above. A staff house was attached to the kitchen section of the main house off the entrance court. Off the far corner of the Wantilan, the valley–view side, they built a ‘Royal’ bedroom inspired by the large loji pavilions he had admired in the Saren palace nearby of Ubud. They gave this Royal suite a ‘Queenslander’ tropical bungalow touch by adding a wide terrace accessed through giant louvered doors.

There was little garden left on the upper terraces so he wanted the interiors to be ‘sparkling’: too many ‘valley view’ houses are drab he felt, once the view ‘goes out’ at 6 p.m. He enlisted the services of Trompe L’oeil artist du jour Stephen Little and give his florid fantasies full reign. The results were miraculous: he made the Royal Suite feel like a cardinal’s bedroom in an ancient Portuguese castle. The tile frieze painted up the wall was like the side wall on a Venetian gondola garage, updated in the 1950s. The bedroom had bold character and wit.

In the main house the maestro created frescos taken from our joint Port Jackson ( Sydney Harbor ) past. On one sliding door Stephen painted, in naïve neo-native fashion, a fresco of a fictitious, operatic First Fleet, arriving at Padang Bai, the port of East Bali . It had been inspired by a similar work on the stairs of the legendary Taj Hotel in Port Aguarda in Goa , India , a snap of which I had produced. Other screens featured hyperreal Trompe L’oeil of coconut-weave walls. On the pewter colored cement floors of the main living room Little painted Taro-card heraldic rugs complete with the corners scuffed up. Harlequin tile patterns, rich wall colors, and high camp decorative touches (Matador lamps astride Javanese rent trolleys) completed the exotic mix.

Bambu Indah –literally ‘Beautiful Bamboo’ – is located in the village of Baung, Sayan, 15 minutes south of central Ubud. The villa is comprised of seven unique Javanese houses. These are historic traditional homes built by Javanese tribes over 100 years ago. They are hand-carved teak wood, some intricately painted and all finished with thatched grass roofs. These houses once served as the residences of a Javanese nobleman (as bridal homes). John Hardy brought them from Java and lovingly restored them to serve as accommodation to many of his guests as well as a private hotel.

Afrika House
The Africa House, is called Africa because of the wonderful furnishings that adorn it which comes from Africa from the rawhide Ethiopian bench to the stools to the wall hanging and wooden trays. This house is the master piece of Bambu Indah, measuring 7 meters long by 6 meters wide not including the very generous porch and private bale next door and over sized bathroom. This room includes a second bed, which can be used as a day bed or for sleeping. The bathroom boasts a very generous rain shower, large full view mirror and a handmade copper tub that fills from the bottom through very beautiful circular holes carved in the hand hammered copper. This house is probably the most private of all four and with the en suite bale, it feels like true privacy is something that can be achieved here. This house is at the southern end of the natural spring fed pool and enjoys the sound of constant running water. The house is surrounded by vegetable gardens which are tended daily by the staffs who will lovingly prepare you a meal from the same not 10 meter in front of the Africa house is a wonderful deck just at the cliff of the Sayan river gorch where two lounge chairs and table are perfect place to have afternoon tea or cocktail.

Padi House
The Padi House, Padi meaning rice field, has an active rice paddy just enface. This particular house is approximately 8 feet off the ground, and measures 6.5 meters long by 5 meters wide, not including a very generous porch and super large indoor outdoor bathroom. This particular house has fresh water running past the southern deck which pours into the natural chemical free swimming pool. The oversized copper spiral rain shower is a dream, and the water pressure in this house is extraordinary. If you like the sound of running water this house is perfect for you. It is one of the large rooms and has room for a second bed.
The furnishings including an oversized mirror and extraordinary cotton batiks, white checkered linens with the four poster bed and the red Morrocon carpets complimenting the Burmese laquerware, absolutely extraordinary in this very exquisite Padi House.

Kuning House
The Villa House is kuning and Kuning means Yellow.
This is a house probably built for a wife, built in 1829, the carving date is still on the door with a heart in it.
It’s a charming little home, a 5 meter wide porch just in front of a natural spring fed pool overlooking the picturesque Sayan river valley and surrounded by luscious gardens.
This is a perfect moderately priced house, for a honeymoon couple as it has wonderful antique furnishings and rustic charm. It is 5 by 4 meters, not including the very spacious indoor outdoor bathroom with a generous rain shower and a slatted floor.
The Kuning house is situation just between the Kuno House and the rice field that borders the Padi House.

Kuno House
The Kuno House, which means Primitive, is 6 meters long by 5 meters wide, not including the generously proportioned porch and ensuite bathroom with a glass tile roof. This is a more spacious house than the Kuning house, has better light and shares a similar spectacular view of the Sayan river valley. It has 4 poster bed covered by a cotton-cheese cloth mosquito net , very elegant and comfortable. This house has an over sized mirror which effectively doubles the virtual space in the room and of course porch has nothing blocking the view from the wonderful Sayan river valley. There are antique furnishings including rustic Burmese laquerware in this charming hut. And if you come at the right season the house is surrounded by the famous night blooming Jasmine that only blossoms in the night once every 6 weeks. It is a dream to shower in the indoor outdoor generous rainshower at the Kuno House.

Elora House
The Elora Room is named after John’s first daughter, this room was originally part of the owner’s land and house, it was moved piece by piece just next door to Bambu Indah. It is the most light, friendly and generously a portioned room and so far as the glass and wood windows open on two sides and the ceilings 20 feet high. This house is built of iron and red wood and has a large porch overlooking a very large vegetable garden beyond which is the Sayan river gorge. This house is ideal for longer stay for somebody who perhaps have some work. The room is 5.5 by 6.5 meters wide and has a private indoor outdoor bath surrounded by mud walls covered with traditional Indonesian tiles. The airflow is good in this room, curtains cascading around the room and the bed are gorgeous blue and white and the bedding is or course wonderful. This room has some mud love Tibetan carpets and antique Chinese and Javanese furniture, truly a paradise.

Jawa Lama House
The Java Lama is the first house that the owner placed on the property in the year of 2000. It reeks of charm with wood shingle combined with glass ceiling, wonderful day light and beautifully carved wooden floor and wall panels. The actual bedroom is only 3.5 meter wide by 6.5 meter length give you the spaciousness allows for maximum comfort cascading cotton mosquito nets adorn the king size bed and massive double doors open out to a very closed in private porch. Outside of which is an iron wood deck perfect for practicing yoga in privacy in the mornings. The outside porch has a table and chairs to experienced breakfast and a bench for reading in the late afternoons. The Kolam House which means Pond House, has its own pond and its very own bale deck with orange cushions. There is a wonderful Ganesha statue in the garden in the front pony tree; you step across 5 stones through a pond to reach the Kolam House. Which when you come through the threshold invite you to a very well lit and warmly comfortable room. The room itself, although it is only 4 by 6 meters, is beautiful and comfortable.

The two-bedroom Villa Sun is a masterpiece of style and design and although it is on the small side there is more than enough space to discover a wonderland of relaxation and good times.
The furniture is free form and funky with a large round rattan daybed sitting in the middle of the circular living room, flanked on either side by two comfortable metallic coloured bean bags; one yellow gold, one red gold. And all facing the 42” Plasma screen TV. Still following the curves of the circle, a small kitchenette and a curved, glass topped bar table attended by six red cushioned bar stools flank the entrance and there is a perfect balance for outdoor living with a small garden as balanced by your own private swimming pool. Two large ensuite bedrooms lead off the main living pavilion, both with French doors that open to the outdoors; one to the garden and one to the free-form pool, whose shape follows the curve of the house

The absolutely stunning view of the Ayung River right below the villa and the tropical garden make this simple artist’s retreat perfect for a very relaxed vacation in truly Balinese surroundings. The views and space offered are superior to the Four Seasons’ and Amandari’s, but the rate is less than 20% per bedroom compared to these luxury resorts!

However, this is NOT your dream villa if you expect to be served caviar and champage on short notice, and because of its location on the steep ridge small children should be supervised.

The Villa

Built by the famous German painter Peter Dittmar about 20 years ago and renovated in 2004, this unique artist’s retreat is an excellent example of how traditional houses were built at that time with thatched roofs, open living areas and bedrooms with walls from woven rattan.

Your reach the gate walking a narrow path from the main road, and inside the tropical garden you face several separate buildings. The main house accommodates on the ground floor a two-level living area with large sofas, several traditional sofa chairs and tables to enjoy the breath-taking view of the river below and the surroundings. On the ground floor is also a bathroom, and two staircases lead to the up-stairs master bedroom.

A square dining pavilion with a table for up to 6 guests is located next to the main house and close to the separate kitchen building and a studio (locked when Dittmar is in Sydney, in Munich or travelling) and a guest bedroom above. An additional guest cottage is set in the garden behind the main building next to the swimming pool.

The Bedrooms

The air-conditioned master bedroom above the living room in the main house can be accessed via a staircase from the ground-floor bathroom or via an outside staircase. It offers spectacular views of the Ayung river and the valley below. On the desk is a telephone & fax machine, and here you can connect your computer to the Internet.

The air-conditioned bedroom Number 2 is located in a small traditional guest cottage with thatched roof behind the main house. It features a private open bathroom and a small terrace which overlooks the swimming pool and valley.

Bedroom Number 3 has been added in 2005 and is air-conditioned as well as fan-cooled and located above the painter’s studio, offering from its balcony a great view of the Ayung River and the surroundings. This bedroom has also a private bathroom.

The Garden Residence comprises two villas, situated around a private pool. Each villa features an open living and dining area and wooden sundecks with sun loungers.

The Pool Villa Is a modern, Balinese style villa, and boasts a king size bed. Glass doors are opening directly to the pool, surrounded by bamboo walls and a tropical garden with on one side the sundeck, with two double sun loungers. The bathroom with a stone bathtub and half open air shower room is decorated with limestone.

The Timor Villa is a big and antique wooden house from the island of Timor, and is completely renovated with modern features, for optimal comfort. It comprises a bedroom with four poster king size bed, and a living area, where there is enough room to place an extra child’s bed. The bathroom has a covered outdoor space with the stone bathtub and a separate shower.

One side of the living room has doors opening to a big sundeck with views to the lush tropical nature, and the other villas of The Purist, situated on a lower level of the estate. The other side of the living room has big wooden doors, opening to the pool area. If rented separately, these doors will be kept closed, so that each villa offers optimal privacy.

River Residence
The River Residence comprises two villas, connected by a royal covered but half open living with lounge sofas. A small river is streaming almost through this relaxing area, and brings a peaceful atmosphere by the sound of streaming water. The two villas are identical. They have both a modern and minimal design, and are decorated with various Balinese art and objects. One villa has a king size bed, and the other villa has the possibility to change the beds into two twin beds. The bathrooms give you the feeling of being in your own spa. Each villa has its own sundeck with impressive views, and have direct access to the huge main pool of The Purist.

Jungle Villa
This modern , Balinese style villa is located at the other side of the main pool and has direct pool access along the small river which is streaming through the estate. It is overlooks the lush jungle at the other side of a river deep below, and therefore one enjoys the sound of streaming water.

The villa has a four poster, king size bed, and a royal bathroom with a small goldfish pond. This half open spa-like bathroom is an ideal place for guests who prefer to receive in-villa treatments. Glass doors open onto to a covered and half open lounge area.

Bamboo Villa With Private Pool
This villa has its own pool with a waterfall to the lower level, where the Spa and Yoga building is situated. It comprises a bedroom with four poster king size bed, and a small living area with an extra sofa bed that is separated from the main bed area by a bookcase with flat screen tv, (This villa sleeps up to three people). At the other side of the pool is a Bale-like lounge and dining area, with a wooden sundeck between the Bale and the villa. The entire garden is surrounded by natural stone walls and a lot of beautiful yellow bamboo.

Hill Villa With Private Pool
This big wooden antique house from the island of Timor, is completely redesigned with a grey pebble stone on the ground floor and a mix of wood and beige limestone on the walls. Here you will find the twin bedroom, which easily can be transformed into a second bedroom with king size bed. This room can also be used as a “siesta place” as this room has glass doors which open up directly to the pool area.

At a split level part of the villa you will find the master bedroom with a four posted king size bed. The two rooms are connected by a five meter high ceiling with an alang-alang’ roof. (This is a typical Balinese roof knitted from straw). They share a half indoor and outdoor bathroom with a stone bathtub and separate shower room.

The living room has glass doors at two sides opening to a wooden sundeck with a covered dining area. This impressive house is decorated throughout with wood carvings and is built on a hill with an open view. However privacy is assured due to its lush tropical garden.

South of Bali, in the heart of Seminyak, the Nyaman Villas have been designed and built by the well established architect Stephan Remini. Contemporary, spacious, functional, design, the 6 villas have been conceived to offer the highest comfort and the best facilities for a luxury stay.

Decorated with style, surrounded by luxuriant gardens with a private swimming pool, the Nyaman villas are located near to the beach. Boutiques and restaurants are within a walk able distance shops and restaurants are just a short walk away.

From the centre of Seminyak, a road bordered by splendid palm trees leads out towards the residential district not far from the well known Oberoi Hotel. In this privileged setting one passes a guardhouse and then enter into a wooded driveway leading to the luxury Nyaman Villas.

The central feature is an open-air lobby, just like a hotel, from which paths lead to the various villas. On the right of the lobby a wide pathway bordered by palm trees, elegantly lit at night takes the guest to the villas. Walking on stepping-stones over a water feature guest’s access to the lobby.

The Nyaman villas are contemporary designed luxury villas for rent in Bali.

These villas with full hotel services consist of either 4 bedrooms or 2 bedrooms per villa. Two of the 2 bedroom villas can be interconnected to make a four bedroom adjoined villa if necessary. The impressively large front doors of each villa are made of locally carved noble woods.

2 Bedrooms Villas

The 2 bedroom villas measure 25 square meters per room and have a total surface of 500 square metres including the garden.

The building opens completely onto the private garden that has 2 bedrooms on either side of the large open living room – 75 square meters – with its signature high ceiling and an American style fitted kitchen. Each bedroom of 21 square meters has a private bathroom – which is partly open-air – and a large dressing room of 10 square meters. Each villa is bathed in luminosity thanks to large bay windows.

These contemporary villas of great comfort open onto their private garden and swimming pool of 75 square meters. Each pool has a shallow and secured kids area.

The 2 bedroom villas can be interconnected if required via a sliding wall in the gardens.

Interior decoration is a mix of sober style and timelessness. In the rooms as in the living room the furniture with purified lines was designed to measure in beautiful materials : leather, flax, purple wood… These sober colour tones enhance the feeling of space achieved by the merging of mole to beige, while passing by the green of gray.

Conceived around the swimming pool, each garden has a terrace with deckchairs, Balinese daybeds known as a “Bale” and an outdoor open-air shower.

Each villa preserves its intimacy behind high and heavy carved wood doors.

4 Bedrooms Villas

The 4 bedroom villas cover an area of 570 square meters. These villas are surrounded by a private garden with a swimming pool of 92 square meters.

Immediately upon entering the villa visitors enter a vast living room of 75 square meters that leads off to the first bedroom. Complimented on the one side by a fully equipped American fitted kitchen with a large worktop of beautifully carved local stone and open to the garden.

Opposite to the landscaped garden the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms are located of 25 square meters each with private dressing room of 10 square meters and a semi open-air bathroom.

Once more the large bay windows give great luminosity and views to the garden and pool.

The dominant colours are mole – beige – natural cement… and the omni presence of noble materials such as leather, flax… velvet bring a timeless elegance and an undeniable luxurious style : leather armchairs, tables in purple wood, mother-of-pearl lights…

The living room also serves as an art gallery exposing a collection of local works of art and craftsmanship.

A contemporary staircase leads upstairs to the master bedroom with a vast parental continuation with a large terrace and private bathroom.

The master bedroom including the terrace measures a total of 162 square meters. Under the high thatched roof in “alang-alang” – traditional Balinese – a large bedroom with an exotic wood parquet floor opens via sliding doors onto a private living room on one side and a large terrazzo floored bathroom on the other. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower and two-person bathtub on a floor of white pebbles. Part of this bathroom is on an outdoor open-air the terrace.

The villa is located 10 minutes north of Ubud’s monkey forest and a scenic 80-minute drive from the International Airport. Well known shopping and dining areas in Sanur and Seminyak are less than 60 minutes south.

The villa location was selected for its semi rural peaceful setting amongst local village houses. In this area, you will experience a Balinese way of life while still enjoying all modern conveniences. The Ubud area is arguably the best place to use as a base when you visit Bali if you are looking for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration. Ubud is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali – scenic rice fields, small villages, art and craft communities, ancient temples, palaces, rivers, museums and traditional markets.

Accommodation
Villa Batu Kurung boasts features retained from the original Balinese home that once stood on the property including a traditional architectural style and water feature to greet visitors as they enter through the main gate. This 300 meter square Ubud property consists of 200 meter square home, 3m x 6m swimming pool and traditional bale bengong (gazebo).

Modern conveniences include a 42″ LCD TV, satellite dish, home theatre, iPod/iPhone docks, and high speed ADSL wireless internet. All furniture is locally made including a dining table featuring inlay mother of pearl for six facing open doors to the swimming pool.
